Best Nicknames in the NBA

Over the 67 years the NBA has been around, there have been many nicknames given to players.  Some were great, some not so good.  Here you will find my top ten nicknames in NBA history.

10. Ironman (Jeff Green)

Jeff Green

Green was given the nickname Iron Man after he went through life-threatening heart surgery.  This named is one of the most deserved names in the history of sports after what Green overcame.  Read the story about his journey here.

9. The Answer (Allen Iverson)

Allen Iverson

Say what you will about Iverson and his lack of "practice" but the guy had the sickest crossover to date.  For Philly in the 2000s, AI was "The Answer".

8. "Pistol" Pete Maravich

Pete Maravich

Passes so lethal they called him the "Pistol".  One of the greatest players to ever step on the court and one of the best nicknames all time.  See the Pistol's top plays here.

7. The Glove (Gary Payton)

Gary Payton

Known for his defense (especially on MJ) Gary Payton got named "The Glove".  If you grew up in the 90s like I did you'll also remember these.

6. The Black Mamba (Kobe Bryant)

Kobe Bryant

Kobe, like a Black Mamba, can strike an any given moment.  He is a big time scorer and clutch and will go down as one of the greatest.  He's deadly ie the Black Mamba.

5. The Iceman (George Gervin)

George Gervin

Anytime I see a Gervin highlight reel (and I'm from SA so that's a lot) I hear Foreigner's "Cold as Ice" playing in my head.  The man had the sweetest finger roll to date and also was one of the best scorers the league has ever seen.  He truly was as cold as ice.

4. Clyde "The Glide" Drexler

Clyde Drexler

When he went up for a dunk, it was like he was never coming down.  He was known best for his powerful slam dunks.  See his top 10 here.

3. Dr. J (Julius Erving)

Dr. J

I was 11 before I even knew what the Doctor's real name was.  His high flying acrobatics inspired some of the guys on this list (as well as the greatest, Michael Jordan, himself).  See the Doc's top 10 dunks here.

2. Magic (Erving Johnson)

Magic Johnson

Top 5 greatest player of all time, top 5 greatest nickname.  If you watched Magic play it was just that, magic.

1. Hick from French Lick (Larry Bird)

Larry Bird

This one is both hilarious and accurate at the same time.  Sure we could have gone with Larry Legend, but you're lying if you don't think "The Hick from French Lick" is the greatest nickname of all time.

Honorable mention:

The Mailman, Big Fundamental, Hakeem "The Dream", Flash, The Admiral, Diesel, White Chocolate, and AK47.
